500 Days of Summer (2009)

Far away from the hectic city streets, meaningful conversations take place: Kisses, breakups, new beginnings, and ends. This is what happens on the Los Angeles rooftop in 500 Days of Summer, the film we selected for a special screening in collaboration with Dakendagen on Thursday 5 June.

When Tom, a hopeless romantic who believes in soulmates and love at first sight, meets Summer in his office elevator, he develops the biggest crush of his life on the girl who hums with headphones on: “To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die.” What he doesn’t know yet is that he’s just fallen for a free-spirited girl who doesn’t believe in love. In 500 Days of Summer, we follow these two quirky personalities over the 500 days of their relationship, as the story jumps back and forth through time, from sweet first dates and first kisses to misunderstandings and heartbreak.

500 Days of Summer is a film for anyone who keeps falling for the emotionally unavailable. It’s thorny yet exhilarating, funny, and sad. A twisted journey of highs and lows that doesn’t quite go where you expect. With Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt at peak indie charm, 500 Days of Summer is a time capsule of early 2010s aesthetics: bangs and vintage dresses, record store nostalgia, indie music, and that cool-but-distant energy that defined a Tumblr generation.
