Apolonia Apolonia (2023)
Lea Glob • 116 min • Denmark, Poland and France
For this film night, we’re teaming up with Nest, an exhibition space that gives a platform to makers, writers and thinkers and offers artists space to experiment, research and show their work.
Apolonia Sokol was born in an underground theater in Paris and raised by a group of artists in the 1990s. In her 20s, she studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, one of the most prestigious art schools in Europe. A Danish filmmaker, Lea Glob first met her back in 2009 during her time at a film school, captivated by her life almost looking like a storybook, leading her to document her life over the course of a 13 years period. Over time, a special bond between these two women has grown.
The director, Lea’s story also plays an important role in this film, especially the one from her period of pregnancy. The rarely-spoken perspective of a pregnant woman, and how the pregnancy changes women’s surrounding situation is incorporated into this film. The life as artists, love, challenges and pleasures of being women in the world of sexism and patriarchy are shared by both Apolonia and Lea.
Apolonia Apolonia received a numerous amount of critical acclaim in the documentary field, including the Best Film at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, the world’s most important documentary award and shortlisted as a finalist for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards.
