About the film

Six-year-old Hushpuppy and her ailing, hot-tempered father Wink live in a small community on an island in the Louisiana bay called the “Bathtub”. As the name suggests; they are surrounded by water because the land lies beyond the dyke system which means there is no protection from rising sea levels. Dangerous as can be, Wink believes Bathtub is the most beautiful place in the world and looks down on people on the other side. ‘On the dry side they’re afraid of the water like a bunch of babies’, he tells his daughter.

Abandoned from the institutionalized world, the children in Bathtub grow up in the wilderness where they learn to survive amidst the threatening water, catch their own fish and keep animals and grow plants for food. A storm is coming up, but fleeing is no option for Wink. Overnight they hide witnessing their community getting destroyed. When the storm is down they go searching for other survivors to build a new camp. Soon, the authorities find out about the people in Bathtub who are forced to take shelter on dry land. ‘Prison’ as Wink calls it.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is a realistic fantasy tale presented in a unique format. The film moves you to the drama and the dreams of a six year old girl, the magic and the menace, melting ice caps and prehistoric animals that will be unleashed.

The film has won many international prizes and was nominated as the best film for the Oscars, making Quvenzhané Wallis (Hushpuppy) the youngest actress ever nominated.
