After having gotten out of prison, Billy (Vincent Gallo) is about to visit his parents in Buffalo. They don’t know that he served time, and he goes all out for their approval, believing it’s a good idea to bring home ‘his wife’ to meet them. But he needs a wife first. So he kidnaps Layla (an iconic Christina Ricci), a 20-year-old tap dancer, and forces her to pretend to be his spouse. To his surprise, Layla plays her new role with verve – his parents come to love her, instead of him – and Layla starts to feel for Billy.
Yes, Layla’s willingness to go along with the plan feels very Stockholm Syndrome. Yes, Layla is the ultimate Manic Pixie Dream Girl, a beautiful creature only here to salve Billy’s wounded soul. But director Gallo is aware of all these themes and plays with them in a comedic way. Buffalo ‘66 is the directing debut of the controversial Vincent Gallo, who also wrote the film and plays the main lead Billy. With this low-budget gem, Gallo marked himself as the new darling of independent American cinema, alongside Harmony Korine and Larry Clark.
