But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)

Jamie Babbit • 85' • The United States

SOLD OUT

Megan is a picture-perfect American schoolgirl living a flawless life. She enjoys class, visits church, and loves her parents and friends. But… she hates kissing her boyfriend and prefers tofu over steak. Her friends and family all know it: Megan is gay. Completely confused as to why, she is sent to True Directions, a conversion camp. Still in denial, the young, colorful queers at the camp will open her perspective on love.

Styled in pink and blue outfits, But I’m a Cheerleader is a hilarious satire full of queer humor and gender stereotype mockery. A Barbie Dream House meets Edward Scissorhands, as the director Jamie Babbit puts it herself. The cast stars drag artist RuPaul playing a reformed ex-gay and of course Natasha Lyonne.

At the moment of its release critics skewered the film. It was the time of the AIDS pandemic and there was a lot of tragedy within the queer community. Being a feminine lesbian herself, Babbit missed a lesbian comedy in the film industry and wanted to make a gay Clueless. Babbit was amazed by the absurdity of gay conversion and with her first feature film she dared to present an innovative look at queer cinema. Rightfully, by now, the film has a cult queer status. Come celebrate queer power at Roffa Mon Amour in collaboration with Queer Rotterdam.
