About the film

Two young, anarchist women, Marie (Ivana Karbanová) and Marie (Jitka Cerhova), go on a criminal spree. The world has no values, so why should they adhere to any? It becomes a surreal, satirical journey of jokes and pranks. They get taken out to dinner by older gentlemen, lie to each other and then put the men on the train without mercy. They get thrown out of bars drunk or hang around in their apartments, eat some more and philosophize about life. In Daisies, women no longer passively do what moralizing labels tell them, but move freely and say what they feel like!

In a scarlet of film techniques, the wondrous avant-garde utopia of Vera Chytilova is revealed. From stop-motion to slow motion, from psychedelic color grading to filters in all the colors of the rainbow. The sublime art direction and the funny fashionable characters of Marie and Marie have inspired many a fashion magazine from the sixties to the present day.

Vera Chytilova is the poster girl of Czech New Wave cinema, a movement that “made the Czech people collectively aware that they were all participating in a system of oppression and incompetence.” She was also intelligent, beautiful, philosophical and hilarious. Seen in a brand-new 4K restoration.
