When Andrew Largeman was young, he accidentally knocked his mother into a dishwasher, rendering her paralyzed. Now, he is a young actor: depressed, medicated and struggling to see meaning in the world while waiting in a Vietnamese restaurant. He has not felt many significant emotions for a long time under his medications. But now, he believes, it is the time to make a change – feel the love and pain he so desperately longed for, and maybe get a manic pixie dream girlfriend along the way.

This movie can make you cry with laughter and laugh through tears. It is pure, sincere and realistic, the dialogue is funny and relatable, and there’s something about it that everyone who’s ever lived through the early twenties can understand. Seeking purpose in life that has almost lost all meaning and regaining it – this is what Garden State is all about.
