Dade is only 11 years old when he hacks into 1,507 computer systems. As a consequence, he is arrested and banned from using computers or telephones until his 18th birthday. But just when he turns 18, he moves to New York, and meets a group of young anticapitalist hackers, including the edgy and competitive Kate “Acid Burn” Libby – played by a young Angelina Jolie. Things spiral when a friend accidentally hacks into a corporate system and uncovers a plot to release a destructive virus. Blamed for the crime, the group must rely on their hacking skills to reveal the true responsible party, a corrupt cybersecurity executive, before the authorities get them.
With a New York City characterized by dark arcades, subway tunnels, rooftops, and cluttered apartments in the background, Hackers is a time capsule of youthful rebellion and cyberpunk-style that transports you to the iconic decade of the MTV 90s era. From the high-energy blend of techno, rave, and industrial music to the fashion: mismatched layers, vinyl pants, mesh tops, oversized jackets, and grunge accessories.
Even though Hackers marks its 30th birthday this year, it’s still contemporary in the themes it tackles. Nowadays, we live in a world where big tech companies are the powerholders that dictate the distribution of power and information. Hackers show how a group of teenagers in the 90s were already challenging and fighting back against big companies and data holders, sharing a message against greed that feels even more relevant today.
Before the film starts, a keynote about Digital Culture will be offered about the interaction of social values and AI developments.
