Happy Together (1997)

Wong Kar-Wai • 96' • Hong Kong

Two lovers from Hong Kong travel to Buenos Aires to drown in their passionate but impossible love story.

Whose heart has been broken must have lived with the thought ‘Let’s start all over again’.

It’s the words Po-Wing uses to retrieve his impossible love with Fai and Fai is just as hopelessly attracted to Po Wing. Doomed to collapse, they travel from Hong Kong to Buenos Aires to be “Happy Together”. After a failed trip to Iguazu Waterfalls, both continue their own paths. Without money for a ticket back home, they’re stuck in an alienated city which highlights the feeling of abandonment and loneliness. One night, Po-Wing pops up in the street where Fai works and an era of pull and play starts all over again in a single-bedroom apartment.

Happy Together is the irony of two people who can impossibly share a life together but are intensely attracted to each other. Their passion is visualized by the most famous dancing scene in film history, two men dancing tango in the kitchen. Without ever explicitly mentioning the queer identities in the film, the love is just there. In 1997 Wong Kar-Wai could already show the world queer love has a right to exist in all its passion, beauty and pain.

Wong Kar-Wai won the award  for best directing at Cannes in 1997 and the film is often ranked as the one the best LGBTQ films ever made (we agree). Christopher Doyle’s camera work will blow you away, which makes you travel over the skyline of Buenos Aires full of neon lights, to narrow streets with packed tango bars and the single room apartment from where the fighting, sobbing and healing will deeply touch our emotions.

We close the festival with an homage to love and the city and we are thrilled to announce Happy Together is the closing film of Roffa Mon Amour 2025.
