Theater Rotterdam loves cinema just like us! Especially when created by local talents. Every month Roffa Mon Amour and Theater Rotterdam present a Short Film. On March 20 and 22, we’re going to screen an animation short film New Babylon (2022) directed by a Rotterdam-based filmmaker, animator, and VFX artist, Gideon van der Stelt, in the lobby of Theater Rotterdam.

About the film

An impossible city is built up out of enormous rotating rings, steering the lives of its lonely inhabitants. New Babylon (2022) follows three characters living secluded lives and is a visual trip through an oppressive night in which contemporary, individualistic life is reflected in a circular metropole.

The filmmaker

Gideon van der Stelt is a filmmaker, animator and VFX artist based in Rotterdam. He studied audio-visual arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Technically skilled in many areas, his works are immersive combinations of animation and live action, borrowing elements from urban environments and daily life. For almost six years, he worked on his debut short New Babylon (2022), which once began as a small personal project in his attic in the winter of 2015. It had its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam as part of the RTM programs.
