About the film
On Wednesday, August 14 we’re going to kick off the 12th edition of Roffa Mon Amour. We are going to screen a film in Roffa Mon Amour style and get you a free drink, so you just have to think about your best outfit for the night!
Chris’s pixelated computer screen displays Myspace chatboxes filled with computer slang, Facebook photo albums, and embarrassing videos uploaded to YouTube. It’s 2008 in California, and the Taiwanese-American Chris is skating his way through high school and surfing the social web. At home, he bosses around his older sister and mother. At school, he becomes a lovesick puppy for his crush, Madi. He swaps his loyal group of bicultural Asian-American friends to become the softie amongst the cooler kids. These are just some of the emotional irregularities a teenager goes through.
Everyone visiting Roffa Mon Amour has been through the same episode in their lives; we were all teenagers once. With his feature debut, Sean Wang wanted to show that the emotional rollercoaster of a 14-year-old remains the same even though society changes. Feelings of insecurity, anxiety, and vulnerability run from high to low. Inspired by films such as Stand by Me, Wang wanted to make a coming-of-age tale from an Asian-American perspective. The many first-time actors were mostly cast at skateparks to present genuine charismatic teenagers.
Dìdi premiered at Sundance in 2024 where it won the Audience Award. Sean Wang’s semi-autobiography story is praised for its authenticity and emotional depth. We’re thrilled to present the Dutch premiere of Dìdi as the opening film of Roffa Mon Amour. It’s honest, fun, and very relatable. Join us as we open the festival, and close the chapter on our teenage years!
