About the film
The Gap is a short film that emerged from a series of workshops held with students during an artist residency at Instituto Buena Bista (IBB) on the island of Curaçao. The film follows two protagonists, Jane and Rey, who discover a message in a bottle on the beach. As they read and attempt to interpret its meaning, their conversation leads to personal reflections and associative places. The result is a vibrant, sun-kissed film poem that delves into the subjectivity of language and images.
The filmmaker
Helen Anna Flanagan is an artist working in video, performance, writing and installation. She looks to investigate social structures and the political subtext of the everyday, focusing on affects and emotions, labor and the body.
‘My videos are shaped by the environments in which they are created, interrogating how social experience is presented, transformed, and consumed. Cultural, socio-political, and geographical contexts inform my practice, offering a framework to explore psychosocial phenomena such as group formation and dissolution, the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, and the intersections of agency, freedom, labour, and leisure.’
