Roffa Mon Amour and Wester Paviljoen are joining forces on Thursday, July 11 for the screening of the tragicomic film Toegetakeld door de liefde (2013) by Ari Deelder. What better place than Wester Paviljoen, located in the heart of our city, to watch an iconic Rotterdamse film?
About the film
Arie is struggling with writer’s block and thinks he has found his muse in the beautiful tram driver Sonja. When her tram line is discontinued, he tries in various ways to get in touch with her. He follows her, waits for her outside stores where he has seen her before, crashes the transportation company’s staff party, and rides all the tram lines. When he discovers that there is another man in Sonja’s life, he refuses to let his dream of a life together with her be ruined by this ‘Fat Guy with his magic violin!’ As his fantasies about Sonja become more and more beautiful, Arie’s own situation gets progressively worse.
The familiar Rotterdam setting is juxtaposed with absurdist fantasies and animations. The city is not used just as a setting with its vibrant urban landscape and modern architecture but it’s a character itself. Director Ari Deelder’s personal ties to Rotterdam add depth and authenticity, making the city a living, breathing entity that influences and shapes the narrative, much like any other character in the story.
